Happy New Year!

I’m only a few days behind.

2011 was a good year.

A quiet year in the life of the Stevenson house.

We have no complaints at all to speak of and are thankful for the arrival for 2012.

Eli is 32 months now. Yes, 32.

So big.

He is seriously growing daily before our eyes.

He is wearing a 3T in pants and shirts.

He is wearing a size 8 toddler shoe.

He loves to take bubble baths and “shave.”

His favorite pastime is spent reading books. Any books. All books.

He is a total bookworm. And I’m 100% OK with that.

His favorite book is his Bible (really!)

Everynight Ryan reads Eli the stories of David & Goliath, Daniel in the Lions Den, & The Christmas Story.

Eli can recite them almost word for word.

It is beautiful.

He loves to play basketball.

His favorite toys are probably a tie between his two garbage trucks (yes, garbage trucks) and his two fire trucks.

He loves to sing, and sing loudly – another one of my favorites.

He’s become quite the conversationalist. It’s great fun to chat with him.

He loves to call people and talk to them on the phone.

He especially likes to call Grandpa, Pappy, and/or Daddy.

Everything is a daddy, mommy, or baby – crackers, cookies, birds, etc--based solely on size.

He’s becoming more and more aware of peoples emotions and feelings.

He gets concerned for others when they are sad, and is really good at celebrating with others when they are happy.

He prays daily. Love this.

He knows all of his teachers, and prays for them.

His memory amazes me.

He remembers so many details, places, and things that happened.

Really, it’s kinda weird.

He loves school and his friends there.

Eli’s love for life continues to grow.

His enthusiasm and joy is contagious.

He’s such a likable guy.

For all of these reasons, and so many more I am honored to be his mommy.

He’s an amazing blessing.

His laughter.

His smile.

His nature…..

all bring me multiple smiles everyday.

I’m blessed.

The whirlwind that was December.

Polar Express!!! Eli’s love of trains, and knew found love for Santa this year made this experience extra special. Eli soaked up every moment of it. So much so that he was quite disappointed when it was over.

Welcome Chloe! Our Niece. Born -- so sweet, and so very loved. God has great plans in store for this beautiful girl. I am honored to be her Aunt, and be part of what’s sure to be an amazing journey.

Eli’s first Preschool production was this weekend. Squeezed between my brothers wedding, there was plenty of family that came and joined in the excitement!

Not knowing how Eli would do, he shocked all of us when he chose not only to sing – but to sing so loudly that a few times he was singing solo. Away in a Manger and Jingle Bells, as loud and as clear as he could.

It was a precious as can be.

He beamed with pride, and so did we.

Such a ham.

I just love him so.

My brother got married. Family, family, and more family poured into Sacramento to celebrate this joyous occasion. Marie is a wonderful gal, and we are so happy her and Mikey found each other! May 17, 2011 was the big day and what a beautiful day it was!!

Family photos! For the first time, since my married life -- all of the Higley's together took family pictures. It was so much fun! A HUGE thanks to my dear friend Joelle Smith (www.capturedbyjoelle.com) for her talent and patience with our crew!

Christmas! Ashley, Scott, and Tennley joined us for Christmas this Year. It was so special. For the first time, Eli really understood the concept and was so excited to celebrate Jesus’ birthday. I am so thankful for the many laughs we had this Christmas with all of our family! We are truly so very blessed.

That wraps up Decemeber. It was busy and it went by too fast. We took down decorations a few weeks ago during Eli’s nap. When he came out he started crying and saying that he “wanted more Christmas.” ....Me too buddy, me too. My sentiments exactly. After such an action-packed, family full, fantastic December, it’s hard to pack it all up and wait for it to come again in a year. I am thankful for every moment this past December brought. So many moments to treasure.

A Thankful Goodbye.

November has been a whirlwind.

Eli is 30 months old now and growing more and more into a boy, not a baby. Potty training is cake now and paci is gone (both are still with very small accommodations at night)….but progress is progress!

For the first time this month Eli has gone into his classroom without any tears – this is huge! His little tears have finally been replace with a big smile and a “bye.” Heart warming and assuring, we know he is in the perfect place. The biggest change this month has been his persistence in doing things by himself, and the tantrums that follow when he can’t. We are working through them daily, but wow – he’s so grown up in so many ways, and can truly do so many things independently – however, the tantrums that come remind me how little he is, and how much he still doesn’t understand.

I’ve been thankful for Eli’s lack of understanding this month. Weird to say, I know. But death is such a hard topic to wrap your mind around as an adult, and as a kid – it’s nearly impossible. This month my family lost my grandma. Her passing has been a hard loss to cope with.

It’s taken me a while to sit down and write this. While it’s been heavy on my heart to share about my grandma’s passing, writing it makes it that much more real. Written out, it’s permanent.

Late October my family received word that my grandmother had been admitted into the hospital and things were not looking good.

This past year had been very up and down for her. In the Spring, Eli and I flew down to see her before a intense surgery. Doctors said at that time she might not make it. But – she did. She completed rehab, went home, and was planning on being with us here in Sacramento for Christmas. How quickly things change.

Six months later, here we were again -- October facing the same news. Doctors telling us that she wasn’t going to make it. That there were no more surgeries, no more options. Nothing to be done. Not knowing how long she was going to make it I hesitated in going down to Tucson to see her. Weird, I know, but honestly my memories of my grandma are truly wonderful. She means so much to me. Seeing her at her end was a thought, and a thing that I did not want to remember. My biggest worry was going down there, and then having to leave her and say goodbye. Torn between my heart and my mind, I knew I had to go.

The first week of November, Eli and I flew down to Tucson in a nightmare excursion. We met up with my parents and sister there to support grandma, and say our farewells.

I’m not sure what I expected when I arrived at the hospital. I knew grandma was doing poorly, I knew she was facing her last days – and I was afraid of what I would forever remember.

Grandma wasn’t unrecognizable, but she wasn’t herself either. So much of her body was turning off. It was hard. It was the oddest feeling knowing that I know her so well, but I was having such a hard time seeing through her broken down shell. She told me she had been waiting for me. That she had been worried about Eli and I all night. She always worried, it was one of the traits I loved so much about her. Her care and concern hadn’t changed. There were still comforting glimpses of the grandma I love so much, and every once in a while they would bring a smile.

As a family we spent everyday, almost all day at her beside. Watching Disney Junior, laughing at Eli and Tennley, talking to grandma, and talking to each other while she slept. She was with us, but at times – she was not. Over the course of the five days we were there, she slowly left us.

Every night, when I left her bedside I found myself asking God to take her in the night. Not that I wanted her to go, but I didn’t want to face getting on a plane and leaving her. She was very open with my dad that she was ready. She was tired. Despite our hurt, we told her that it was OK. Her body had been through so much, so burdened. She was done.

The night Grandma went into hospice, was the last night she visited with us. She didn’t die that night, but her spirit got quiet. Her interactions with us became vague, and her understanding was minimal at the most.

Standing at her bedside, we prayed over her. We thanked God for such an amazing gift we He had given us through her life. We prayed that she would feel no pain. That He would give her body rest. We prayed that night out loud the prayer I had prayed every night I was there – that God would take her to be with Him. That he would let her be at peace. That she would leave, before we had to.

Grandma stayed with us. And with much sorrow we left her on Monday.

It was the hardest goodbye I have ever had to face. Knowing it was the very last. For that moment, she knew who I was, and gave Eli a kiss. A moment that will always be stored in my heart. It was a God given moment. A gift.

Grandma passed away Wednesday morning, November 9. With a thankful heart that her fight was over, the loss was still great. And still, the tears continue to fall off and on.

My lifetime of memories with her have never been more meaningful to me.

I will miss her the rest of my life, she filled a big space. A space full of love, belief, and care.
A space always without judgment, and the greatest of concern.
She was always there.

And I will miss her.

Pumpkins, Potties, and Poo….. 29 month Update

PUMPKINS~

Eli has really gotten into pumpkins this year.

He especially likes to identify them as “baby pumpkin, mommy pumpkin and daddy pumpkin.”

After trying to decide whether or not going to the Pumpkin Patch would be a BIG enough bribe (reward) for Potty Training. We decided to scratch the idea and just go as a family. Eli had so much fun running through the pumpkin field, talking to the pigs, and attempting to pick up every pumpkin.

A few days later Eli also had his very first field trip with his school, to the pumpkin patch--luckily it was a different one. Grandma Robin joined him, and I (mommy) met up with them there. At this farm he wasn’t too into the pumpkins just the tractors and slides. With quite the collection of pumpkins, our house is quite harvested out and we are anxiously awaiting the fun fall holidays that are so quickly approaching.

POTTY TRAINING~

Chuga-chuga Poo-poo! Yes, the potty train has visited the Stevenson house and I am proud to say that a week into potty training we are having great success! Yay Eli, yay us!

Last Saturday (Oct 16) the Stevenson household officially said good-by to diapers and officially ventured into the realm of potty training. Having no idea how Eli would do, Ryan and I braced ourselves Friday night for the worse and expected a rough road ahead. Determined, we woke up Saturday and stuck to our guns –NO DIAPERS.

Eli has shown interest in the toilet for many months. Truthfully before he turned to he would like to sit on his “mini” toilet and watch TV. However, despite our hour attempts here and there Eli (and us) could never hold out and fully train. But this time was different. Our minds were set and as parents we were ready for the battle.

I am thankful to say, it actually wasn’t much of one. Eli did great! The first day we had no accidents and he went on the potty with little hesitation.

We found that a Starburst was his incentive of choice, and it worked! Saturday, successful. Sunday, a few more accidents but still successful. Monday (at preschool), all accidents L. That was rough - but at home he id great. Tuesday was a field trip with Grandma and mommy, overall he did OK. Wednesday (at preschool), he held it all morning and then had an accident in his sleep. Poor guy - but at home, that evening he did great. Thursday, SUCCESS at home and school! Friday, success with daddy! Saturday, and Sunday perfecto with both pee and poo – even at church!

Yay Eli!!!! We are so proud of him. I won’t say that it’s been cake or that it’s been without hiccups, as I will discuss further regarding poo, but he’s had such a good spirit about it all. Hooray for the potty trained boy!

POO~

So, the hardest part of Potty Training was poo. Yep, Eli would NOT go poo on the toilet. Last Saturday, when we said good-bye to diapers, Eli started “holding” his poo. All day Saturday, all day Sunday he held it. Sunday evening, he had a #2 accident.

Monday, he held it. Tuesday, he held it. Wednesday, he had a terrible accident in Target of all places. This was truly my initiation into potty training. Thursday & Friday, he held it. L It was awful. Everyday he would cry that his tummy hurt. And multiple times a day he would tell us that he needed to go poo, but when he got on the toilet he’d cry and say “I can’t.” It was so sad, Ryan and I tried everything to help him relax. We’d read stories, give him apple juice, sing songs, we even gave him his paci hoping it would sooth him….nothing.

Saturday morning I was home with him. After knowing it had been nearly three days since he had last gone poo, I was determined to help him get over this poo hump. Saturday, a week after our venture into potty training, Eli was doing so well going pee in the toilet (he had even learned how to stand and pee), we couldn’t understand why poo was still posing a problem.

Thankfully, Saturday and Sunday we reached success. Both days! YAY!!!! Ryan and I were so excited for him, we took him to Target and let him pick out a new truck. Yes, we were those parents in that moment. And I’m ok with that!! Eli went pee and poop in the toilet. He’s potty trained and overcame a big milestone this past week, that deserves a new fire truck in our book!!!

While we haven’t overcome the nights yet, but that will take time. I am 100% ok with pull-ups for a while (we refer to them as “night undies” – NOT diapers). I can’t believe how much he is growing up. Yesterday he was running around in his undies and I found myself missing his diaper covered bottom. There’s something still so “baby” about diapers. As a mommy, it’s like the end of a chapter. I won’t miss their stinky-ness, or cost…. but, I will miss my “baby” who used to be in them. Eli is becoming a big boy. First it was preschool, now it’s undies and going in the big toilet. I can’t believe how fast time flies, and how much he is growing. Ryan and I are so proud of him. He’s gone through so much change these past few months, and he’s done so well. We are so blessed.

Halloween 2011

Fall Break

The first week of October is my Fall Break. I get a week off from school to play with my family. Thankfully this year Ryan was able to take time off too so that we could do something special as a family. With all of the transition these past couple months (new full time job, preschool, Ryan working 4/10’s) were overdue for a vacation.

After much consideration, Ryan and I decided that Disneyland would be it! Yes, we go there often because we truly love it. It always provides the perfect getaway, especially with a two year old.

So, way back in July we started making arrangements to make it happen. Also in July, we found out that our friends, the Smiths, were also planning a trip to Disneyland during that time too! So fun!

We counted down the days to this trip for months, and it was everything we could have wanted. Eli had a great attitude and was so happy the whole time. Despite one rainy day, the weather was beautiful and the park wasn’t too crowded. We had so much fun building memories with the Smith family and enjoying the park with great friends. Most importantly, we got the vacation (and disconnect) we needed.

Below are some of the moments from our trip. Ryan and I have said many times since what a great trip it was, and how grateful we are that we got to go. It was a super special time and so very needed.

Yes, you are seeing this correctly – two in one week! Yippee!

So, this post is a little heart warming, and heart breaking all in one as a mommy. Eli is officially dealing with his first “bully.” Please note I use that term VERY lightly as there is so much more to the situation then what a bully entails.

For the past two weeks Eli has been talking to us about a certain friend at school. For the sake of the family we will refer to him as ‘C.’ At first, Eli would tell us about C being his friend and playing with C. This of course made us so glad to hear he was 1. connecting with other kiddos, and 2. that he was talking to us about it!!!

This week, his demeanor about C changed. Eli has been very hesitant about going to school in the mornings, and has gotten very upset at drop off. In the midst of his crying he would take about C, and how C would push him and hurt him.

Now, as a teacher I know that stories from little ones are not always as they seem. Being centered, I would ask Eli for more information as I would wipe away his tears. Being very articulate, he would talk about being pinched and hit – all by ‘C.’ Ryan and I told Eli to tell C “no,” and to find a teacher when that happens (this is a hard thing to communicate to a two year old mind you). And off to school he would go, hesitant and upset.

All this week this was the situation. I would pick him up from school and he would tell me about C had done to him that day. Hurtful, aggressive actions for sure. However, Eli is two – and one incident can easily be strung out and remembered for a long time. SO, after three days of stories in the afternoon, and tears of anxiety in the morning Ryan and I decided it was time to ask a teacher.

Again, as a teacher I didn’t want to come across as a “paranoid parent.” I know I have a two year old, and what he says does not always go. But I had to follow up, was Eli being bullied? When I picked up Eli yesterday, in the privacy of the office I told his teacher about what Eli has been saying and asked if C was a student, and if they have ever had any interaction.

To my surprise, she confirmed it all. She told me that C has “targeted” Eli. She assured me that they are very much aware of the situation and do their best to keep C away from Eli. His teacher was aware of everything and didn’t realize the effect it was starting to have on Eli. She was thankful that he was expressing himself to us, and that now they know that its definitely becoming too much. I fully trust his teachers, and have no doubt that they take wonderful care of Eli. Never have I doubted, even in this situation. She then explained to me that since I asked and Eli was communicating to me at home about it she could share that C is autistic. They are working with the family to accommodate his needs.

Hmm, my heart was and is so proud of Eli. Not only did he tell us exactly what was happening but, he has such a good spirit that he won’t fight back. C likes Eli, and Eli is helping C adjust.

This is very difficult balance as a mom. I in no way want Eli to be a victim or timid in nature. I do want Eli to learn to defend himself, and know when to walk away. Eli is learning that balance now. And while it breaks my heart for Eli to be bullied, my hearts breaks for C too.

I thanked his teacher for explaining, and told her to continue to help Eli steer clear of C only because it is starting to ware on Eli now. She agreed and thanked me for informing her of Eli’s recent anxieties.

Eli and I had a long talk during our drive home. We practiced saying “NO C!” and “Go Away.” We also talked about ALWAYS telling his teachers just like he tells mommy if C does something.

My prayers last night changed. I always pray every night with or for Eli. As I touch his head every night I pray that God will give him wisdom and knowledge to learn and make solid decisions. I touch his cheek and ask that his words will show and speak the love of God into the lives of others. I touch his chest and ask that his heart will beat after that of Christ’s. I touch his little hands and pray that his hand he will serve others. His feet are always last, and as I touch them I pray that he will follow the path that God has for him. That won’t stray from the calling God has designed him for.

Every night I pray this for my sweet boy.

Last night, after events of the day Ryan put him to bed. I passed by him and whispered my prayer.

And I started to close my heart reminded me of day and C, and Eli’s sweet nature. In that moment I was reminded to pray for Eli’s spirit. That he would be bold, yet nurturing. That he would have confidence, yet be humble. That he would love others, but not be victim. That he would know when to stand, and when to walk away. I stood there thanking God for my articulate boy, and that his voice would continue to speak truth. That his words would always be used for good.

I know God has great things in store for my son.

May this be the start of journey for Eli that is not negative, but one that God uses in his life to mold him into the man he will someday become.

So, I am embarrassed at how far behind I am. Makes me sad that time has flown by. It's been a busy two months with so much going on.
BUT-- I can't dwell on the past. Time to update and look forward, to more consistent postings....I PROMISE!
So, for an update:
Eli and I transitioned into our new schedule, and in some ways are still transitioning. Eli still has a hard time at drop offs. He cries. BUT, once we leave he's happy and a learning machine.
Since starting school, somethings we have celebrated with him are --
*he can officially sing the whole alphabet song
* he knows the names of all of his colors, and can accurately identify them 60% of the time. :)
* he has learned many new songs -- the dinosaur song, and the bridges song
* he talks about his teachers, and the children's pastor by name
* he tells us about God and Jesus and that he talks to them.
* he tells us almost daily that his day was "great"
* he talks about his friends by name and what he does with them.
* he says "Red is rojo" and says "azul"
Overall, he is blossoming so much academically and socially.
I knew school would be good for him, but wow -- even being a teacher I had no idea how much he would grow---instantly!
His teachers adore him and Ryan and I are so confident in his placement and love there.
Despite his hesitancy in the mornings, he leaves so happy. We know he's just fine.

As for myself, I am adjusting too. Full time has been a different world. It's been a lot at once, but we are getting in the groove and I am finding my stride in my new position.

Ryan is as stable as ever. Always the rock. He also transitioned these past two months to work 4-10's so that he can be home with Eli one day a week. This has been a tremendous blessing and relief to me. Eli now spending one day with Ryan, one day with my mom and dad, and three days of the week at school. Very doable for a two year old, and more often then not he is with family. THAT warms my heart and gives me so much more peace.

All in all, Eli is growing and so is his determination. We are officially in the "hard" two's. He is so affectionate, loving, and caring. His joy for life is contagious and he is such a fun little guy -- BUT when he want's something, he is learning to voice it, and often tries to demand it. It is very trying for us as parents. We are learning so much about making and maintaining boundaries. Parenting is tough stuff.

Everyday we face something new, and tackle a little more of this tough stage.
These past two months have been so challenging for the three of us. We have all grown individually and together as a family.
It's been a whirlwind, but I truly think it's brought us closer.
I'm proud of my little family.
We are journeying out into the world--together.

So long sweet summer.....

In college I loved the band/singer Dashboard Confessional.

They sing a song in which the lyrics said just that, "So long sweet summer....."

I always thought that it was the perfect words as I faced fall and returning to school.

Now so more then ever, I think they couldn't be more fitting than this very day.

Today marks the end of my summer.

I go "back to school" tomorrow, full time.

Wow. I can't even believe it.

1.) That summer has gone by so very fast, it's now over.

2.) That I am going back full -time

and 3.) My "part-time at home mommy" days are ending (for now).

Lots of change.

Lots of emotions.

I can't remember if I've shared about this shift on here or not, so for an update.

At the end of last school year, a full-time position opened up as the School's Curriculum and Assessment Coordinator.

My hearts desire when I went into education was to eventually get up to administration. This job was the perfect opportunity for me to begin the journey into pursuing my "professional dream." However, with the leap into the position came the great trade-off of ending my part-time at home "momminess."

Seriously torn, I applied and completely gave the decision to God.

I prayed multiple times a day that God would slam the door in my face if it was not going to be beneficial for Eli, or if the timing wasn't right, or if it was just not His will for me. We prayed if this was God opening the door for us to pay off some of the debt that our journey into the unknown has cost us this year. Was it a true path to take, or just a temptation. I prayed my heart would be centered in the decision. That if it was right, peace would come and if it wasn't right, peace would come.

I prayed. Ryan prayed. We gave it to God to sort out.

In May I found out that I got the job.

Overly excited, but also completely overwhelmed with the many things that meant.

I am thirlled with the opportunity, and am ready to jump in.

BUT-- it's soooooo bittersweet.

Aside from God, my family is my number one priority. And Eli, well HE is my greatest gift.

Being an amazing mommy to him is my greatest calling.

This has put a lot of guilt and worry the decision.

Trusting that God has been in control with this whole process, and that HE knows all with be OK, I am trusting HIM with tomorrow.

Trying to set aside the guilt I feel for not being an at home mom, I am truly blessed to be able to pursue this opportunity.

I have felt very guilty about it.

Eli starts preschool tomorrow.

Four days a week for now, with hopes that it will eventually only be three days a week -- and two special days in the week set aside with Grandma Robin and Daddy.

I've struggled with this.

Feeling as though I am leaving him,

I'm not.

I'm still called to be his mommy. Amazing, even in working.

Being at home with him doesn't define my quality or dedication to him.

My love for him does.

I love him so much.

I care for him so much.

He is God's greatest gift to Ryan and I.

He brings us more joy than we could have ever imagined.

This summer has flown by.

I remember in May when I got he job, I told myself not to worry about August until August came.

It's here.

I have to face it tomorrow.

Tomorrow I start my new job.

Tomorrow Eli starts his learning career in Preschool.

Tomorrow we both start new chapters in "School."

I am so proud of us.

And yes, sad my baby is growing up.

This blog has been much about our journey into parenthood -- and about our baby(ies)

My baby, isn't so much a baby anymore.

He doesn't need me to sit at home and hold him while he naps anymore.

He doesn't need me to rearrange my schedule to fit his napping and feeding schedule.

He's growing up.

He's ready to learn and explore.

He's ready to do more on his own.

He's ready.

I'm not.

As I face tomorrow can I ask you to pray for me?

I really need it to be full of peace.

For Eli to walk with confidence and come home with a smile.

I need to be able to focus, and work knowing this is right.

I need the feelings of guilt to fade away and somehow feel assurance it will be best for our family.

I just need peace...and an excellent first week.

So long sweet summer.

Hello to a new adventure.

A new chapter.

A new area of growing and learning....professionally and in parenthood.

A new era for our family.

The three of us, out in the world making our marks -- but fully devoted to each other more then ever.

It will be well.

26 Months..and it begins.

Eli is growing so much.
His learning expands with every passing day, and so does his vocabulary.
This month he asked Ryan while Ryan was checking his Twitter, "who are you texting daddy?"
Yes apparently he knows the word texting, and that we do it with our phones.
More and more his questions make sense, and are logical.

His baby-ness is disappearing.
His confidence is growing.
His independence is ... well, the daily struggle.

And so it begins......the dance for independence.

Not one that I don't embrace, as I know it is part of the growing up process.
He is learning.
Learning boundaries.
Learning right from wrong.
Testing his daddy and I.
Seeing how far he can push.
Checking out and exploring life.

As a parent, its a hard phase.
Especially for mommy.
Discipline is tough work.
Being home with Eli is one of my most treasured blessings,
but it's also extremely hard (right now).
I often feel I say the words"no, Eli" "Stop, Eli" and "time-out, Eli" all day.
While I know so many more words are shared, and "I love you" is said a billion times a day -- somedays, it feels they fade into the days battle of Eli's independence.

Eli is so determined.
So caring.
So loving.
So fun.
Even in this phase, we laugh so very much.
As God continues to develop my precious boy, HE is also molding Ryan and I into the parents Eli needs us to be.
We are all growing and learning together.
Imperfect, but perfectly put together.

Why? 25 months

Eli is 25 almost 26 months old.
His favorite two questions are "what's that?"....followed immediately with "why?"

As a person who has been around kiddos a lot, I am pretty used to the "why?" question.
However, when it happens (what seems like) 100 times every five minutes. WOWZER!

Ryan and I attempt to come up with creative answers to stop the whys, but they never work.
Finally we have restored to "Don't ask why." Yes, we are now those parents.
....and don't ask "Why?" :)

As for other fun facts about Eli, this month he has grown into a few new favorite shows/movies. He still loves Toy Story --- BUT he can watch Bambi and The Aristocats ("Kitties") over and over again.
He also has recently enjoyed Sesame Street ("Elmo") and Yo Gabba Gabba ("Gabba")

It has finally warmed up here and he is all about the water and getting wet. Still, such a water baby.

He asks every morning about every single extended family member and what they are doing....and yes, it's always followed with "why?"
IE: Eli: "Where Baby Tenney? "
Me: "Shes at her home with Auntie"
Eli: "Why Mommy?"
Me: "Beacuse she's with her mommy Auntie."
Eli: "Where Auntie Ashy"
Me: "Shes at her home far away?"
Eli: "Why Mommy?"
Eli: "Thats where they live."
Eli: "Where Ukle Scott?"
Me: "He's at work at church?"
And so on and so forth with EVERY family member until we get to daddy.
Eli: "Mommy, where daddy?"
Me: "Eli, where is daddy?"
Eli: "Daddy at work"
Me: "Yes, Eli daddy's at work."
Eli: "Mommy and Eli in mommy car"
Me: "Yep!"

...every day.

I love it. He is so bright.
So concerned.
He loves his family so very much.
He wants to be with people always.

He is so curious.
This month he got stung by his first bee walking in the grass at the park.
He cried, but rebounded quickly.
He loves to look at bugs, but is a bit scared of them.
He loves to sit and play on the toilet. Still waiting for a "magic present" to happen there---someday.

He's grown into loving church -- and requests daily that we go there.
"I go to church!" he'll say.
We love this too!

He's started sleeping in his crib for naps (YIPPEE)
and actually from time to time will request that he can go to bed -- this shocks us every time.
His new favorite bedtime routine is to have a book read to him.
He has two favorites --
I Love You Through and Through, and Tiny Bear's Bible.

He's starting school at the end of July.
And while I am still struggling accepting the changes happening, he is so excited.
He often states in the morning "I go to Skoo" and when we tell him he will soon -- he gets very excited!
I hope he feels that way about school for many, many, many years to come.

He's such a joy.
Such a gift.
Such a growing boy.
Changing everyday.

I'm blessed.

Seven Years.

Today marks Seven years of marriage for Ryan and I.
It's been a beautiful journey.
May 21, 2004 - a warm day in Tucson, AZ.
I remember so many tiny details of that day as if it just were yesterday.
I'll admit that seven years isn't that long, nor was it that long ago -- BUT in a world were love lasts in short spurts, we are proud of our seven years!

Reflecting on our adventure as man and wife, I laugh when I think of where we've come from.
What does seven years of "us" mean? (Not necessarily in order)

*We've lived in two different states.
*We've moved FIVE times (argh!)
*We've adopted two dogs (Lily since week two of marriage, Scout around year 4)
*We've gone through three couches (two previously loved).
*During year five we bought our first NEW couch and mattress.
*We've gone through 3 cars.
*We've both gained and then lost weight :)
*We've lost loved ones.
*We've gained new loved ones.
*We saw three of our siblings marry.
*We became Auntie and Uncle.
*We became Mommy and Daddy.
*Lost a precious little life.
*Gave birth to a perfect gift.
*Bought a house.
*Sold our home.
*We've cried.
*Went to Hawaii.
*Had our cars stolen twice.
*We witnessed our friends journeys into parenthood.
*We have indentions on "our side of the bed."
*We go to bed at 9pm.
*We know each others buttons.
*We don't press those buttons.
*Went to Disney World.
*Been on staff at 3 churches.
*We've laughed.
*We find our weekends are often filled with visits with the grandparents (our parents).
*We enjoy nights at home.
*Date night still means dinner and a movie.
*We've gone to Disneyland, three times.
*We've had 3 ER visits.
*Been part of one crazy car chase.
*Driven to Michigan, and back.
*We've prayed.
*Had 7 different jobs (between us both)
*Went on a cruise to Alaska.
*Started 2 side jobs.
*Stepped out in faith three major times (at least)
...and this is only the beginning of a long list of life's small *but big* moments.

Seven years. Not at all a long time, but still full of major life changes.
All in all, we've loved, learned, grown and embraced each other through these early years.
A life time awaits.
What an honor it is to travel it all together.

This year Ryan and I really built up the whole "birthday party" concept for Eli. His birthday party quickly adapted the name "Eli Party" and he was ready!
May 9 is Eli's birthdate. Since it fell on a Monday this year, we kept it low key in preparation for a grand celebration on Saturday (May 14). however, his birthdate did not pass with out a dinner out and his big gift from mommy and daddy, a train table!

So, Saturday (May 14) was Eli's birthday party. With tons of friends and family joining us, we celebrated "choo-choo" style! Jump house, hotdogs, cupcakes, and balloons -- some of Eli's most favorite things made the the part a huge success.

Today you turn two. Unbelievable. It truly seems like just yesterday I was holding you in my arms wondering what your little voice would sound like, and what your personality would develop to be. Everyday, we are knowing more and more about you.
You are fun. You love to laugh, and make people laugh. You love to play hard, and explore. You are fun.
You are loving. You love to give "Squeezes" and kisses. You love people, and love your family. You love our dogs and love to be on the go. You love.
You are curious. You observe. You watch. You ask questions. You are often figuring out how things work and why they do what they do. You enjoy watching workers and working yourself. You are curious.
You are sensitive. You hurt for others. You care for others. You are gentle with little ones smaller then yourself. You adore your cousin Tennley. You take care of your "baby." You worry when mommy cries. You worry when anyone cries. You are sensitive.
You are determined. You are strong willed. You are headstrong. You are usually balanced, but sometimes you just want what you want. You are a courageous. You are brave. You are confident. You are determined.
You are happy. You love to sing. You love to play. You love to read book. You can spot trains, the baseball field, airplanes, the color blue, boats in the river, trucks -- and many many more. You enjoy feeding ducks. You explore parks. You have the best time with your cousin Brody, your pal. You are happy.
Above all else, you bring us so much joy. Eli, we are so proud of the little guy you are becoming. Everyday, God uses you to teach us more about his love, and discipline in our lives. This year, you have become so much more independent. It's bit a hard transition for mommy to begin letting you grow and go. (This is a catch up post.)
In a whirlwind decision, April 14 - Eli and I got on a place a few days earlier then planned and rushed across the country (as only Southwest determined) to Raliegh/Durham, NC -- Tennley was coming! My sister was having a baby, my first niece. Determined NOT to miss her arrival, we went.
Eli and I arrived in the early midnight morning of April 15 and Tennley made her arrival the following morning of April 16.
She is perfect. Beautiful like her mommy. And know holds a VERY special place in my heart. Eli and I spent her first days in NC. Ryan came the following week. The 16 days in North Carolina went by much too fast. While we were ready to be home after being gone so long, I was not at all ready to leave my sister and Tennley.
My trip there was perfect. Being part of her first breaths was beautiful. I am forever honored.

22 & 23 months - a "two-in-one."

I've fallen a tad behind.
With my grandmothers health in jeopardy, it's been a BUSY month (or two).
Eli is growing up so much daily.
He knows so many of our friends by name.
He continues to be infatuated with the potty, through we've yet to have a 'successful sit' on it.
He favorite quotes are "go bye-bye" "I want choo-choo" and "what's that?"
Eli has learned how to do the "groucho walk" and "horse smile"
He will regularly initiate praying by grabbing our hands and bowing his head,
sometimes he will even start the prayer before we can.
He likes to try to roll head over heels on the floor.
He loves to be outside.
Eli has become a true California boy and LOVES his flip-flops and shorts.
His favorite house shoes are his rain boots.
He also likes to walk around in high heels- he's quite the balancer.
Eli likes to take out blankets and play "night-night" with himself and his stuffed animals.
Eli's a pro at talking on the phone (especially to Auntie Ashley)
And is practicing Tennley's name, along with all of the other recently born babies names in our group of friends.
Eli knows that money goes in machines, and that debit cards get swiped--he likes to pay.
He is starting to have more confidence jumping off of things.
He's started to attempt singing the "ABC song" - his favorite is "H J K Men" the letter H is definitely favored.
His becoming more and more efficient on his tricycle and can actually pedal by himself!
Eli went on his first real train ride with mommy (a special date) 3/22
His current favorite TV requests are Chuggington "Choo-choo" and Finding Nemo "Eemo"
He is learning boundaries and how to better obey.
He is starting to understand earning things and his favorite treat is "coooo-kie"
He talking so much more everyday and his phrases are becoming longer and longer.
His laugh is contagious and his smile gets bigger and bigger.
Eli has a strong temperament and knows what he wants, when he wants it.
He loves to play in our cars.
His favorite snack is anything peanut butter (he takes after mommy with that.)
He loves his dogs "Wiwy" and "Tout" -- Lily is by far his favorite, she actually let's him touch her :)
He loves his daddy so much and asks all day "where daddy?" or "my daddy?"
Eli loves to snuggle and cuddle, and loves to have the three of us watching a show together or going together.
He's getting better at manners and regularly correctly says "taint tcho (thank you), peas (please), cuse me (excuse me), bess tcho (bless you), sor-wee (sorry)"
He's a people person through and through.
Bottom line he's truly a gift, and we are so blessed everyday to be part of his world.
I can't wait to see the prints he leaves and he grows daily into the man God created him to be.

The "D" word -- Discipline.

Yes, we are at that stage.
Eli is in his "terrible twos."
He is not at all terrible, BUT at times -- his behavior and tantrums are.
As I have always said, Eli is very confident, and determined.
He knows what we wants, he knows where he wants to go, he knows what he wants to do...
even when mommy/daddy say no.
Cue giant fit.
Yes, we are at THAT stage.
The stage where we as parent REALLY have to set firm boundaries.
The stage where Ryan and I find ourselves being 'tested' by our precious (almost) two-year-old.
The stage where everyday, as a mom, I am struggling with how to properly train (and discipline) my darling boy.
IT. IS. HARD!
Honestly, time-out doesn't always work.
Eli still isn't able to fully communicate everything he wants.
He doesn't understand "safe" or all of the "whys"
... and therefore--meltdown mode is triggered.
90% of the day he is the same happy, loving, energetic Eli.
It's just a few moments a day.
A few tantrums here and there.
Sometimes for no real reason.
Sometimes in public (eeek!)
And sometimes just getting into the car seat can a tremendous battle.

As a mom, I find myself praying in each one of these moments.
Praying for confidence in my parenting.
Praying for the most effective way to react and "discipline" Eli.
Praying for guidance.
Praying for Patience.
Praying for Grace.

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." - Proverbs 22:6
This verse is my motivation right now.
Eli teaches me daily so much about myself, and I'm learning every moment how to be a better parent for him.
Overall, it's a good time.
A growing time.
He's at such a fun stage where he is interacting with us like a little boy and understand so much.
With this growing, he's also growing in will and determination.
And that's OK -- someday these traits will be used to do great things.
Until then, may we as his parents continue to guide him through love and yes, discipline.

These days....
I find myself starring at Eli wondering where my baby went.
I often here him talking in the next room and am amazed at how much I can understand.
I see Eli becoming part of the world. Interacting, observing, and making his own little prints here and there.
Eli is approaching his "terrible twos" -- Yes, temper-tantrums and a strong will make for interesting moments sometimes.
Eli is twenty-one months old.
He is polite - we hear "please, thank you, and sorry" regularly.
Eli is independent he loves to explore (and find trouble) all by himself!
He knows place and can identify stores by what's inside.
Eli loves to play with daddy, and knows when daddy is ready to go to work.
He loves kisses, and hugs -- and gives them MANY times a day. I love that!
Eli got his own first pet "Fishies -- Woody and Buzz." They are his new nightlight.
He requests TV shows by name, and like us -- won't watch TV if one of the shows he likes isn't on.
He can identify Buzz and Woody, and Mickey characters ANYWHERE.
Eli is obsessed with dogs and can spot them far away. "Hi doggie"
He is currently cutting his two-year molars. This has been a long (sleep disturbing) process.
He has learned so many animal noises. This month, his grandma Joni taught him to neigh.
Eli loves to caress our faces.
He enjoys picking out shoes for us to wear.
He is still learning to ride his bike.
Eli LOVES trains, and is always looking for them. Cha-choo.
He's growing.

He's changing into a little boy.
My baby is disappearing daily.
But more then anything...

Eli makes me so proud to be his mommy, but that has never changed.

I realize I am in a very unique situation. Not only do I get to stay home with Eli, but I get to teach too. I am one of the few out there who has to work, but also get's to be mommy in equal parts. In California, two working parents is completely the norm. It could VERY easily be our family too. Thankfully, through God's provision and us staying on a tight budget, we make it work. It's a gift I don't take it for granted because I know how great of a gift it truly is.
Most of my day's "off" are balanced between running errands, cleaning house, catching up on 'to-do's' and keeping our 20 month old entertained. Unfortunately, some days I feel as though the first things listed take up most of "OUR" day together, leaving the entertainment last.
This week, I felt overly challenged to really focus on Eli. This week was a three-day off week for me. That means I have had Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday off and will go into teach on Thursday and Friday. It's what I call my "short" work week. Despite both jobs are full time.
I LOVE these weeks. Crazy as it sounds, that one extra day makes such a big difference.
This week my goal was to do something special each day with Eli at the very start of our day.
To spend time savoring each day together.
In the process, we had many laughs and hug filled moments.
Eli is growing up so fast.
This week, I saw him as a talker, as a thinker, as a problem-solver, as a social lite, as a explorer, as a comedian, as a lover, and as a confident young boy.
A boy.
I honestly can't believe that.
My little baby is becoming a little boy with each passing day.
He's not a baby anymore.
He's active, and determined. He's strong-willed and compassionate.
I get this time with him weekly.
It is a gift that I cherish, but can fill with "other" things so easily.
In my intention to make Eli feel extra special this week, I found that it was more special to me.
I'm the lucky one.
I've known that, but this week -- I really grasped how lucky I am.
As Eli and I explored Sacramento together-- I thanked God multiple times for allowing me the gift and amazing job--
of being home.

I'm blessed.

Our BIG gift from our Higley parents was a whole family trip to Disney World!
It was magical!!!
We loved and lived EVERY moment at Disney that we could.
From sun-up to park closing four days in a row we did all the Disney we could in the time we had.

As Mommy, I was a little concerned about how Eli would do with Disney overload. Not sure how to balance naps and the over-stimulation that Disney offers -- I was trying to prepare myself to be flexible and cater to Eli. HOWEVER, Eli was a champ. He napped in his stroller with NO problems. He loved EVERYTHING Disney world brought his way. Umm, except the characters. He was not comfortable around them. BUT even there he overcame, he went from tears and fear to "hi's" and "bye's" (if I was with him).

We have SO many special memories from this trip that we will surely cherish our whole lives.

20 months.

As I sit here typing out this blog, Eli is fully engaged in a Saturday morning episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. This month (sad to say) TV has sparked his interest and his watchful eye. He won't watch everything, and he doesn't watch long. But WOW, he has a few shows he loves and always enjoys watching.
Currently, at the top of his list are The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Blue's Clues -- not too far behind is Handy Manny. Eli does not watch all of these shows everyday, nor does he even watch TV everyday. But, in a bind-- these keep him busy and VERY happy for a few minutes.

So, what else.
WORDS!
Eli's vocabulary has sky rocketed this month.
There is absolutely no way I could list all of the words he uses regularly.
So I thought I'd share a few of my favorite's he's learned this month.
#1--by far Thank you. Which in Eli articulation sounds like "Tank too." It's the sweetest thing ever. He say's it all of the time and especially when you do something for him. MELTS. MY. HEART! Definitely a habit I hope he keeps and continues.
"Choo-choo." Eli says it "Choo-chooooo." Where we live in West Sac, trains are frequent because of the port. Eli loves to see the train, and choo-choo with them. His interest in trains has been for a few months now, don't know why. We aren't train people--but apparently he is.
"Mimy" any ideas? MICKEY! And "Buuuuuh" which is for "Buzz!" Eli become buds with these two characters at Disneyworld this past month. He loves them, and can spot them ANYWHERE. And while he will ask to touch and see anything he see's with his new favorites on them, thankfully he does not WANT it all.
"MINE!" - Don't really know where this came from. But apparently EVERYTHING in our house belongs to Eli. The battle has begun of teaching him that everything is NOT his. Yay.
His currently learning how to ride the tricycle he got from Santa. Peddling is still a bit of a challenge for his legs, but he's getting there. Hopefully when the weather warms up, he'll be a pro.
He's been practicing sitting on the big boy swings -- by himself! He does well, until he's done--in which he let's go and grabs for us. Needless to say, we've been doing a lot of catching! Thankfully, no owies yet!
This month Eli learned to point to his heart when we ask him Where Jesus lives. He will also point to everyone else's heart after his.
His favorite dinnertime routine is to pray as a family. Which even keeps us accountable as his parents. When we sit down to eat, Eli never fails to put his ands out for Ryan and I to grab and pray. Lately he's even started "praying" before daddy could start. Another heart melting moment.
I think my biggest realization this month has been how much Eli is soaking in and understanding. He really is a sponge right now. Everyday it seems he learns new words, new concepts, and a new understanding for things that he's seen or heard for 20 months now.
I can't believe how grown up he's getting.
It's so fun and so amazing.
Raising a child is definitely one of God's greatest gift in life.
Eli, is no doubt our greatest gift.
He's a treasure that gets bigger everyday.

Keeping Tradition.

Some of my fondest Christmas memories are of me standing in the kitchen of my grandma Joanie's house, baking cookies with her, my mom, my sister, and my great grandma Mickie.
My grandmother passed away far too young. She is missed often, but especially for me during the holidays. It's when she seemed the most content. The excitement of Christmas always radiated through her, and she became one of us kids. I miss her so very much. I miss her voice singing above the congregations at the Christmas Eve Service. I miss her smell with Channel gently filling any room she walked in. I miss her hugs, and the way she said my name.
Most of all, I miss her love for me,
and the love Eli doesn't get to experience from her.
With her gone, keeping her alive in my heart is the last gift I have for her.
This year, in her honor, introduced Eli to baking cookies.
With a chair pulled up to the counter, just like it was done for me so many years ago--Eli and I shared a long cherished family tradition.
As we decorated each cookie, I thought of my grandmother and great grandmother -- they were nearby with every laugh, every sprinkle eaten, every oops.
In the tradition, they stay alive in our hearts.
And in the tradition, Eli will learn more and more about my grandmothers.
I love Christmas.
I love tradition.
I loved introducing Eli to one of my most cherished memories.
May it be a tradition, starting this year, that he too carries with him forever.

This year has been a big year of changes in the Stevenson house. Despite the changes, our faith and hope has never waived. We have known that God has been with us through it all. This Christmas, celebrating Immanuel meant so much more. We celebrated our journey as it's happened, and the one still yet to come. We celebrated hope in the future because our future lies in the hands of a mighty God.

He came, he lived, he died - and he is alive today -- with us.

19 Months.

Eli is 19 months old. Closer to 2, then 1. Bigger with every passing day. Growing smarter every minute. Showing us more and more the beautiful person God is creating him to be. He is strong and determined. Playful and loving. Caring and active. He's all boy, but tender.
We are so blessed.
19 months.
Where has the time gone?

THis month Eli has grown so much.
Here are the things he added to his "can-do" list.

Eli says "thank you," mommy (not mama), Bubby, Sausage, Santa, lights, wow, tree, yuck, owie, . He repeats random phrases -- but isn't consistent saying them himself.
He had his first big owie-- a shiner on his forehead.
He met Santa for the second time.
Had his second thanksgiving, and LOVED turkey.
Eli ate a candy cane for the first time--yum, yum.
He loves cashews and nuts.
He is wearing a size 6 in shoes, and 18-24 months in clothes.
He loves his grandparents VERY much.
Eli likes looking at pictures and pointing to the people he knows.
He like to take an adult by the hand and guide them to what he wants.
He can tell you how old he his by holding up 1 finger.
He LOVES to dance, and do twinkle fingers when someone sings "Twinkle, Twinkle little star."
He answers questions, and understands so very much.
He likes to put soap/lotion on himself, and blow the bubbles off of his hand.
He likes to guide the dogs around, and put them in their cages.
He say's uh-oh when something spills, and LOVES cleaning up messes.
He's active and everywhere.
He's our little Eli, growing so big with everyday.

Ryan and I decided last Saturday would be a perfect night to capture the lights around town. Our hunt lead us to two amazing spots with houses FULL of lights. Eli LOVES Christmas lights. With each house Eli's response was simple, but perfect "Wow." That's often how I feel too in awe of the season.

Scout and Lily have not been blogged about much lately. Sad to say they definitely are back stage in our lives, but are still very loved (most of the time.) With Scout being younger, we hoped he would be VERY close to Eli. While that bond has not quite happened yet, surprisingly enough "old lady" LILY is very patient and loving with Eli. A few weeks ago Ryan walked in and found Eli in Lily's kennel, with Lily. The pictures tell the rest.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Lights are up outside. Our house smells of fresh pine from our freshly cut Christmas tree. Christmas light glow all day and add a special warmth to our living room. Christmas movies are playing non-stop on the hallmark channel. And I am giddy to experience the magic of Christmas once again through the tiny eyes of my little guy.

Thanksgiving

This thanksgiving we were blessed to have all of our immediate family in town. We ALL had dinner at my parents house. It was such a special time of laughter, fun, and turkey of course!

How time flies.
Not only are we on the cusp of the holiday season, with Thanksgiving only a week away,
BUT Eli is officially 1 and half.
Seriously?
With each passing day from here until May he will be creeping closer to being two.
Infancy is nearly over.
Toddler time is here.
He is growing up so, so much.
Independent.
Loving.
Funny.
Strong.
All words that so perfectly describe his beautiful nature.

While I wish there were some big accomplishments in the areas of sleep and separation anxiety, there ARE a lot of other big things to celebrate this month!

This month:
Words Eli has learned - Owwee, Jackson, ruff ruff, shirt, meow, swing, home, milk.
Eli spent two nights in the hospital due to Bronchiolitus.
He fell out of the swing at the park for the first time (trying to jump out like daddy).
He wears a size 6 shoe.
He is in between 18month and 24 month size clothes, mainly 18 month.
He can turn on the computer, television, and DVD player.
He can put DVD's in the player--by himself (we NEVER watch DVD's -- honest! WE really have no idea how he figured that out.)
Eli points out our car in parking lots and our house from the park.
He likes to hold keys and try to unlock things.
His favorite things to do are to "clean" with wet wipes or brooms, take longs baths with bubbles, sit in a big chair and eat.
Eli went to his FIRST Kings game.
This month we completely dumped bottles--only cups!! 10/20
Eli had his FIRST haircut - 10/27
He went trick or treating with his cousin for the first time 10/31
Eli loves to dance to shows on TV-though we keep it to a minimal.
Eli weighs 25.4 lbs
He is 32.5" tall.
He is so much more then we could have ever asked for!

Catching Up.

I've fallen behind. Again.
So in recap.
On October 27, 2010 -- Eli got his first haircut!
HOORAY!
Not that he had a ton, by any means. But the hair he did have was long, shaggy, and out of control.
Uncertain of WHAT was going on, Eli did well for the most part.
His only tears came when they "cleaned" his lines with the clippers.
From baby to little boy in 20 minutes....tear.

Halloween was a blast! Eli was a dinosaur.
Between his tiny learned "roar" and his excitement found in chasing his cousin Brody, this halloween was so memorable because Eli really experienced it's fun for the first time.

When it rains....

This weekend it rained here in Sacramento.
It drizzled all weekend long.
Saturday, we woke up to overcast and rain.
Eli had a runny nose.
Nothing overly taxing or even enough to bother him.
We did our typical Saturday errands as a family, and had a wonderful dinner with our Stevenson parents.
Eli was happy.
While in the bath, I noticed some funny breathing so I gave him a small dose of his inhaler.
He had gotten this inhaler to use in such events following his first ER visit in August.
We also plugged in his humidifier --- just to be safe!
Eli went down like a pro.
Ryan worked on his sermon he was preaching the next morning.
Ryan and I went to bed listening to the rain after a great day together.

10:30pm--Eli wakes up crying. We settled him down and he goes back to sleep.
11:30pm--Eli wakes up again. Sniffling and wheezing.
Unable to calm his down from his severe discomfort, Ryan brings him into our room.
We gave him more of his Albuterol treatment.
Eli cuddled in with me, moaning and restless.
Wheezing, moaning, crying, and two more treatments later -- with no sleep, we called the advice nurse at 2:00am.
After a ten minute conversation and having us count his breaths, she told us to go immediately to the ER.

(True confession here--no judgment please)
Now, IF you have read our other blog at all-- you may or may not know that our insurance has not been the greatest lately, and well--we are STILL paying for Eli's last visit to the ER (and will be for a while.) SO, with that bill lingering in our heads Ryan and I did not jump at the advice nurse's advice. (BAD PARENTS! --I know)
We decided we were going to TRY to hold out until morning. That if he could just calm down, we would only have to pay a co-pay fee at Urgent care.
So, we held him. Wiped his nose.
And buckled down until morning.
Eli fell asleep for an hour.
Cried for more.
Wheezed a lot.
And I was done.
At 6:00am Eli was unable to be comforted.
He was breathing short, shallow, HARD breaths.
He was crying, and moaning non-stop.
Knowing that money should NEVER be a factor, I got up.
After looking online to see that the urgent care didn't open until 9am.
I told Ryan there was no more waiting, he needed help.
Ryan agreed.
Off I went and to his dismay --
Ryan had to get ready to preach.

Driving fast, but carefully in the rain - shaking as I listened to ELi struggle in the back.
I felt I couldn't move fast enough.
Arriving in the ER, Eli was crying.
I ran from the parking lot praying no-one would be waiting.
The waiting room was empty.
The desks were empty.
Panicking I tried making eye contact with a lady behind a glass screen.
She pointed me to a clipboard.
I set my sweet breathless boy on a chair and started filling out a paper.
A nurse came out and began to ask me what the problem was when she quickly changed her demeanor and told me she was going to just take us back.
Within two minutes doctors and nurses were surrounding Eli.
He was being put on oxygen and a nebulizer treatment.
X-rays followed, and another nebulizer treatment.
After two hours the doctor came in and said the x-rays revealed pneumonia and that Eli would need to be admitted.
Alone, scared, and so upset I sat there in complete disbelief.
The doctor promised me he would be OK, and not to worry, but that Eli would need to be transferred to another hospital for care.
I called Ryan. Thankfully Bill W had already called him and dismissed him from speaking.
Ryan was on his way.

After 8+hours in the ER, Eli and I rode in an Ambulance to UC Davis Children's hospital.
7th floor, Room 73.
Isolation.
It was a nice room.
Big windows.
A medical crib.
Chairs for us.

UC Davis did more x-rays.
Within two hours they had ruled out pneumonia and were confident he had a severe case on Bronchiolitis- inflammation of the air passages caused by the common cold.
They wanted to keep Eli over night for treatments and to make sure his breathing issues subsided, pretty confident he could go home tomorrow morning.
So, with only one of us able to stay--and Ryan having to work Monday.
Eli and I slept over in the hospital.
While he did great through the night, he woke up working hard for air.
A bit perplexed, the doctors upped his treatments and there we stayed -- all day.
Eli tethered to a monitor that would only let him go about four feet from him crib.
In isolation, unable to leave. To walk around.
IT.WAS.BRUTEL!

It became even harder when we were told he would have to stay for another night.
Devastated, emotional, and exhausted.
We bunked up again.

Eli was discharged Tuesday morning at 11:45.
He was so excited to be home he ran around, got himself worked up, and started wheezing again.
Thankfully, with a new treatment regimen, we can help him here at home because it's not as severe.
He's on the mend.
Getting better everyday.

I'm glad I made myself get up and go.
Many times through out this week, Ryan and I found ourselves saying--we're glad we didn't wait another minute.
It was scary.
It was hard.
It was stretching.

When it rains...it pours.
But after the storm, comes rest and a beautiful rainbow.
Eli is smiling again. And laughing. And playing.

I am so blessed to get to work part time, allowing me to get to spend precious days every week with Eli.
When I'm off, I try really hard NOT to fill the day with errands, but balance the day with errands and fun. In the past two weeks I was able to capture some of our fun.

I cherish every moment I am home with Eli.
I realize it is a gift.
One that I can't imagine not having, and am so blessed to have.

Eli is jumping. He jumps and jumps and jumps.

He laughs.

He says "wow" -- a lot!

"Wow"when he toots.

"Wow" when he burps.

"Wow" when he sees things surprising.

Lots of "wows."

He says "whoa."

He loves the park.

He loves his dogs.

He loves to run!

Eli can open the computer.

He can sit at the table like a big boy (as long as he doesn't get silly.)

He picks his nose.

He points to his nose.

He points to his hair.

He points to his eyes.

He went to fairytale town for the first time (9/22)

He likes to make animal noises, currently "meow" is his favorite.

He loves to watch animals.

He likes to press buttons and put keys in places.

His favorite toys are his remote control car, anything with buttons, his stuffed dog Scout, books, mommy's phone and laptop.

He says "night night"and lay's down.

He loves to color and draw with crayons and pens.

He likes to clean the floors and tables with rags and/or wet-wipes.

He loves to dance.

He likes to put toilet paper in the toilet, and throw away everything.

He LOVES garbage cans.

He knows what button to press on our alarm clock to turn on music.

He knows when we drive up to church, his daycare, our house and other places.

He knows our cars.

He's going through a bit of separation anxiety.

He doesn't like getting his teeth brushed, but he loves sucking the toothpaste off of his toothbrush.

He likes to put lotion and soap on himself.

He will grab sets of shoes for mommy and daddy (by himself -- they match about 70% of the time)

He gets excited when mommy and daddy come home.

He's a happy, energetic, affectionate, and curious 17 month old.

He brings so much joy to our lives.

He puts a smile on my face a million times a day.

He is growing so fast.

Time flies when you're having fun, and with Eli--life's a blast!

When Ryan and I moved to Sacramento six years ago, we made it a quick tradition to go to Apple Hill in the fall. It's such a fun place to explore, buy pies, enjoy Autumn, and buy more pies!
With Eli, our trip has become more about the animals, and less about the pies-- but this year Eli learned all about Apple Doughnuts, and well--he's hooked!

My October officially started yesterday. To celebrate the gorgeous fall day, Eli and I went to the Zoo. It was the first time Eli really noticed and was amazed by the animals. He mimiced their noises, watched their movements, and made many people laugh at his shenanigans. Eli is growing up so fast. Everyday I get the honor of seeing the man Eli is building him up to be. Today, however, he was a little toddler enjoying the animals at the zoo -- and acting like a little animal himself.

Eli and I met my class at Fairytale town while they were on at field trip with my teaching partner. It was Eli's first visit. He loved exploring and running around the park. Most importantly he loved the animals. Below are some pictures from our fun afternoon together.

Besides the little me time that comes when Eli naps, I LOVE watching him sleep.
I find myself so overwhelmed with the tiniest details of his perfect little body. I am amazed at the intricate features that are only his, and only designed by God.
So perfect.
So treasured.
So peaceful.

16 Months

I sit here, reminiscing of a growing boy.
It's nuts to think about how fast time flies.
It really does.
EVERYONE told me it would and I believed them, but never did I think this fast.
Today, I picked up Eli from his recently started preschool. Today was his fifth day.
This has been a very hard transition for us as a family.
It's been one fought with many prayers, tears, and much anxiety.
All of that to say, today was his fifth day.
As I packed his bag this morning, the knot it my stomach grew (as it does every school day) worrying about what Eli's day would be like.
I worry about him a lot.
Mostly just concern....
Will he be happy?
Does he like it there?
Is he eating enough while we are gone?
Does he feel abandoned (I know, pathetic)?
When will it get easier for him?
When will it get easier for me?
These are the questions that flood my mind when I pack his back, and drive him to school.

Today, on our way Eli and I prayed together.
We prayed for both of our days. For daddy's day.
For our schools.
For my students and his friends.
For his teachers.
For our spirits to be brave and confident.

When I dropped Eli off, he cried for a brief few seconds.
When i picked him up, he was all smiles. It was the first day I picked him up - happy.
My heart was overjoyed.
The whole ride home, Eli talked.
He gabbed and gabbed.
I can't tell you what he said, but I'm sure it was all about his day.

The preschool thing is growing on us.
It wasn't our plan.
It's not necessarily what we thought of having to do.
But if he remains happy, my heart will be too.

Now for updates:
WORDS!!!!
Lots of them!
This month Eli probably doubled his vocabulary.
Words he uses regularly are:
dog, more, done, dada, momma, cup, water, cheese, grapes, nana (banana), cup, shirt, shoes, tickle-tickle, hi...and every once in awhile will surprise us with other words.
He knows and makes the sounds for a cat, monkeys, elephants, and bunny.
This month he learned the sign for "Please" (rubbing his belly.)
Had his first visit to the ER. (8/13) - breathing troubles.
Learned how to drink from a straw. (8/18)
Started having tantrums.
He went to his first day of Preschool (daycare) 9/1
Is starting to run.
New hobbies/favorites:
jumping up and down in his crib,
turning off and on lights,
picking his nose (definitely stopping this one),
helping mommy and daddy clean,
blowing his nose,
throwing away things (especially his dirty diapers),
putting on mommy or daddy's shoes,
reading books on laps,
carrying the key's to the mailbox,
swinging at the park (only swinging),
wanting to get his own food,
dropping his food on the ground and stomping on it,
tickling and giving zerberts (goosing people),
and saying "hi" or waving to anyone.

Weight: 23.8lbs
Height: 31 3/4 inches

He's full of energy, curiosity, affection and spunk.
He's head-strong, determined, and yet caring.
He's growing so much everyday.
I can't believe it, 16 months.

I never leave my heart in San Francisco, but oh how I LOVE that city.

Ryan, Eli, My parents and I all made a quick getaway this weekend and headed to SF overnight.
We had so much fun eating out, shopping, and taking the cable cars anywhere they could go. We saw so much more then we ever had before! It was great!

Ryan, Eli and I were blessed by a dear family with a few days in their beautiful cabin. The cabin was located about twenty minutes from South Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada's. It couldn't have been nicer! Eli had a bit of a bug that snuck up on on Sunday evening, so we really spent the time doing as little as possible.
What a refreshing and generous gift.

My Great Aunt Faye and Uncle Dale treated us to a trip to the San Diego Wild Animal Park.
Despite my aunt and uncle not being able to stay the day with us, we made the best of it and truly loved our time. Eli is really getting into animals so he ATE IT UP!

On our way down to Southern California, Ryan and I decided to make a VERY last minute decision to change our plans and go to Disneyland for the day.

It was FANTASTIC!

Eli loved it.

It has truly been a dream of mine to take Eli to Disneyland.

I have always loved Disneyland, and as a kid going there was one of the many highlights of my childhood.

All of that to say, our decision to go had me on cloud nine.

Eli was quickly captivated by the characters, rides, lights and disney magic.

All in all, he did so well!

I would have to say that his favorite things were by far the Parade and King Arthurs Carousel, BUT it was a start!

I am already counting down the days until we can take him again.

Little did he know who was RIGHT behind him....

I'm behind here.
This month my summer ended, and back to work I went.
Seems like the beginning of school marks the end of my time to "get things done."
I don't like that. However, it is only a few weeks - and then my life returns back to normal.
Thankfully!

So, in addition to everything I wrote about in my lats post--and to catch up.
Eli is now 15 months old!
He is into everything and can be found ANYWHERE!
Climbing is now an understatement, I think it would be better to say he can scale anything.
His vocabulary has definitely increased. This month he has learned how to make an elephant sound, and how to say keys. His favorite word is cheese, which of course correlates to his favorite food.
Eli learned, and LOVES to dip--anything!
And, this month he intentionally smashed his first bug! (Oh yay.)
Unfortunately, Eli also took his first big fall off of a bar stool onto the tile floor this month.
It was his first big climb, and his first terrible fall.
On that same note--Eli also dropped a glass measuring cup on his big toe, luckily the glass didn't break--but his toe definitely split open (this was his first big ouch!)
Eli has become quite independent in the pool with floaties. He loves the water, and has tried to climb into pools on his own a few times.
He had his first overnighter with Pappy and Gma Stevenson. (7/16)
Eli meet the Smock side of my family, which included his Great Grandpa Jim.
He knows where the park is across the street and prefers to swing over anything else.
Eli is obsessed with dogs, and insists on letting our dogs out of their kennels every morning.
Eli will not give up his bottle, and though is a pro at drinking from cup, does not like milk from a cup--unless it's his cousin Brody's.

Eli is growing so much daily. It's truly an honor to get to see him develop and blossom into the little guy God is creating him to be.
It's always hard for me to say goodbye to my summer. I am blessed to work part-time and be home with Eli a lot, but being home with him everyday during the summer is definitely the BEST blessing of all.
The past three weeks has been a hard time. They have been non-stop, and I have felt distant from Eli. My time with him has been little, and I am so very glad to say goodbye to that busyness.
I am so happy to jump back into my part time routine, and gain back my Eli and Mommy time.
Happy 15 months Eli.
You are a tremendous gift.

Our computer crashed last week.
We lost a lot of our pictures from May, June and July.
Thankfully, because of this blog and Facebook, I have a few from each event.
It's been a hard loss for me to get over, but I am thankful for what we DO have.

Moving on...
Eli is 14 almost 15 months old.
He is climbing on and exploring everything!
He enjoys throwing things away, which also includes picking up garbage or food and throwing it away.
He is confident in the pool, and will float around in floaties by himself.
Currently he says Hi, Bird, Done, Dog, Dada, Momma, Hot, and Shoe.
He understands so much, and enjoys following directions (ie: give it to dada, go find momma, where's a book?)
He cut his lower molars this month.
He spent his first night at Grandma and Grandpa Stevensons.
Eli meet Mickey Mouse this month and went to Disneyland!
Eli meet The Smock side of our family and The Roberson side of our family, including his Great Grandpa Jim.
He knows where the park is across the street--which scares mommy.
Eli will climb into his swing and swing by himself.
Eli flew with Mom and Grandma Robin to AZ.
He has learned how to open doors with pull down handles.
He loves to brush his teeth and take showers!
Eli took his first hard fall this month off of a stool onto the tile floor. OUCH!
Eli wears size 18month clothes.
He wears size 4 or 5 shoes.
He weighs 24lbs.
He took his first long road trip with mom and dad to San Diego, 7.5 hours!
Eli got his first bad bug that lasted two weeks, he lost 3lbs because of it.

Ryan and I had the opportunity last night to go see "Spamalot" at the Music Circus. I love the Music Circus, so when the tickets were passed our way--of course we took them!
Making for a late night, Eli stayed with Pappy and Grandma Stevenson. This was his first time staying the night there, and only the second time staying the night away from Mommy and Daddy.
He's a trooper, and of course he had a blast.
We had a great time at the show but I'll admitt --I worried (as always) and I think daddy did too though he won't admit it.
I love opportunities to cultivate an independent little guy, but like my dad-- in my heart I will always prefer having my little chicky in the nest (for now at least).

ALL OF THAT TO SAY--we are so very blessed that on nights like last night we can have time together and leave Eli in the most trusted hands, those of our parents.

This evening Eli and I spent an hour at the park. Yes, it was a hot hour- but so worth it. Just the two of us. Laughing, playing, and enjoying the moments together.
I cherish these times together. Even the most mundane visit to the park reminds me to absorb every minute. I am beginning to realize that it won't be long before Eli won't want me to push him on the swing, or go down the slide with him, or hold his tiny hand as he carefully steps up and down from curbs. When that day comes the time will be right. With everyday my baby grows, with everyday he becomes more inquisitive, and with everyday he becomes more and more independent. I'm ok with that, and I will always be his number one cheerleader as he grows. One day he will grow and we will go to the park together so he can show me how big he is by doing it all himself. But for today, we went to the park together and together we played... my growing boy and me.

On our way home from San Diego we made a pit stop at Venice beach. The weather couldn't have been better. Best part- the playground!

June.

This month your mouth has been busy!

Between learning words and growing teeth lots of fun!

Besides Dada and doggy (dogdog) you are learning words slowly but surely.

June 8- Upper molars started popping through. OUCH!

June 10- Sadly this month one of the first words you learned "hot" you pronounce it "Ha." While getting ready for school and work, you were crying. I thought I'd help comfort you by picking you up while I was getting my makeup on. Unfortunately, when I reached for my brush--you reached for my curling iron. You burned your three middle fingers. It was awful. I still don't know how it all happened so fast.

June 12- Went to Monterey, you dropped your bottle in the bay.

June 22- Had your first swim lesson...of course you LOVED it, you are such a water baby!

June 23- You started saying 'HI'

June 25- Learned to climb up on chairs -- and then the rocking chair (June 28)

June 28- First high fever, first vomit spell (so sad)

June 29- said shoe (too) when you saw your shoes.

This month you have become obsessed with trying to jump, and dancing.

You are just too much fun!

Eli,

This post is for you. (Most are.)

May you always hum our song and know that you are and forever will be loved.

Our family has been in a bit of a transitional whirl-wind the past few weeks. It has been a hectic time. Honestly, it's not an exaggeration.

For the past four weeks you Eli, have been in the midst of chaos. From report cards, to end of the year duties, boxes and moving, wrapping up daddy's job and trying to help daddy find a new job, finding a rental home, finalizing a rental home, showing our home and trying to keep our home spotless....the list goes on and on. It's been busy.

For mommy, its been overwhelming and hard.

There have been time where YOU have brightened the moment with your little smiling face.

I have said it before, and I know I will say it a bazillion time again : But I am so honored to be your mommy. You are the answer to so many prayers.

My reminder to prioritize life's busy schedule.

My own little happy place, and laughing place.

You are my sunshine.

My only sunshine.

You make me happy when skies are gray.

No matter what change may come, and no matter where the journey will take us.

The three of us will always have each other.

You'll never know dear, how much I love you....
